Raising Voices Against Sexual Violence in Schools and Communities

This project is funded by Amplify Change and is implemented in six districts: Jinja, Mayuge, Luuka, Buyende, Kamuli and Namayingo. We are using the RTRR guidelines to reduce sexual violence in secondary schools, and are in partnership with 30 schools, five from each district.

Achievements

• Monitoring of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs): Eighteen active VSLA groups across five districts: Jinja (3 groups), Kamuli (4), Luuka (5), Mayuge (5), and Buyende (1) were successfully monitored. The monitoring focused on group functionality, savings discipline, and leadership performance.
• Community Dialogue Sessions: Six community dialogue meetings in Kuluba, Namwendwa, Buwaaya, Balawoli, Nakabaale, Buyende and Matuumu were conducted. These sessions aimed at strengthening community awareness and engagement on key child protection and development issues. The participants were also educated on when, where, and how to report sexual violence cases, aiming to improve local response mechanisms and survivor support.
• Premiere of Documentary on Sexual Violence: The premiere of the “Raising Voices Against Sexual Violence” documentary was successfully watched by different stakeholders. The event was attended by school administrators, community champions, and district officials including SPSWOs, DEOs, DISs, as well as three media houses (BABA TV, Busoga Royal Radio, and Busoga Today). The event contributed to raising awareness and mobilizing action against sexual violence.
• Procurement of IEC Materials: Procured essential Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials to support awareness efforts. These included:140 Sexual Violence Booklets,3 Tier-drops (display banners), 500 Wristbands with key messages, 250 Mental Health Booklets
• Participation in Key Stakeholder Meetings: One of the team members represented CCUg in a one-day consultative meeting at Mayuge District Local Government which focused on case management for children, contributing to the development of improved reporting and referral systems.
• School-Based Sessions: Nine (9) school sessions were conducted across various secondary schools, addressing critical topics such as drug and substance abuse, career guidance, and self-esteem development.
