On February 14th, in San Ramon, Costa Rica , the Education Committee of the Community Action Alliance held its 1st term Awards Ceremony for its scholarship (Beca) students. As proud parents and grandparents watched, eighteen students received vouchers for uniforms, shoes, and school supplies which they need in order to be able to attend school for the remainder of the school year. Three of our graduating seniors were recognized because of their excellent grades and one of them has already been accepted into the University of Costa Rica to study Cyber Security. This is quite an exciting accomplishment as many of our students’ parents never had the chance to graduate high school. And because they come from families experiencing extreme poverty, without CAA’s help and generous donations from our GlobalGiving partners, these disadvantaged but highly motivated public high school students would be severely challenged to be able to remain in school. Satisfactory grades and attendance are required for a student’s yearly and multi-year program eligibility. Completing high school opens doors for future vocational and university studies and therefore provides a path out of the generational poverty these students have grown up in. Thank you to our donors for supporting us and helping our students find a way out of poverty through education.
