On January 28th, The Community Action Alliance’s Education Committee held their bi-annual Awards Ceremony and presented scholarship vouchers to 21 continuing students and an additional 6 new students who will fill the vacancies left by the high school graduation of our seniors. These vouchers can be redeemed from local stores which provide all the necessary items for these students. All children including those from poverty-stricken families here in San Ramon need uniforms, shoes and school supplies in order to attend the public schools in Costa Rica, and a 2022 report from UNICEF estimates that 37% of children in Costa Rica are living below the poverty line. So our challenge is great!
We are very proud to announce that 3 of our graduating students will be continuing to the University of Costa Rica majoring in such diverse subjects as Architecture, Social Work and Elementary Education, and they will receive our Academic Excellence Awards having received straight A’s since beginning high school. Additionally, they received sufficiently high scores in their entrance exams to be accepted into the university system. This is especially notable as they lost almost 2 years of Covid-related class time, but due to their hard work, intelligence, perseverance and the generosity of GlobalGiving donations, they have achieved their goal of being the first of their families to graduate high school! Krystal, Joseybeth and Gabrielle are to be congratulated for their achievements and we wish them the best in their advanced studies. These 29 students and all the hardworking volunteers at the Community Action Alliance are truly grateful for our generous donors at GlobalGiving who made this possible!
