The importance of solar power in summer

Our electricity team cleaning the solar panels!

Hello everyone!

We are writing you from a very sunny and very hot Lesvos. Since our last update in April, summer has truly begun on the Greek islands; days are longer and temperatures higher, sometimes even reaching 38 degrees. This means we face challenges that are different from the winter months, but no less difficult. Firstly, the residents of the Kara Tepe and Olive Grove CampUs do not have air-conditioning in their tents, so that they are vulnerable to overheating. Secondly, they spend more time outdoors, where it is slightly cooler than in the tents, but which also leaves them exposed to the scorching sun.

To prepare for these challenges, we held a Summerization campaign over the past few months. We built shading areas, installed special mist systems (similar to the ones being used at festivals!) that spray tiny water droplets and thereby create cool-spots, and distributed electric fans. Since the mist systems and electric fans are powered by our solar panels, it is incredibly important that the panels function properly.

That is why the resident electricity team has been busy cleaning, fixing, and, if necessary, replacing all the solar panels in the Kara Tepe CampUs. Those in the Olive Grove CampUs are up next! This is part of a larger plan to renovate and expand the solar power program, which you can read more about in our last project report and/or in our program outline under the GlobalGiving Story section.

Another part of this larger plan is to install 7 new solar panels in the Olive Grove CampUs. The need for installing more panels that can provide residents with the electricity to light their homes, turn on their fans, and charge their phones, is especially high now that we have started housing more people in our Olive Grove CampUs. However, we have not had sufficient funds to do so. We are still in need of about €19.000, and we hope you will once again help us raise that money.

Each of your donations to our solar power program, impacts the lives of our CampUs residents in a profound way. It gives them access to power, light, and – of vital importance during these summer months – a place to cool off. So once again, thank you!

With warm regards and gratitude,

the Movement on the Ground team
