With this report, we would like to give you an update on our solar power program on Lesvos, Greece. As always: we thank you for your kind contribution and hope to continue inspiring you with our projects.
What happened so far?
With your support, we were able to build 32 solar panel stations in the Kara Tepe CampUs, and 10 solar panel stations in the Olive Grove CampUs. These power the street lighting and provide 260 families with energy. We also trained three of our CampUs residents to take care of the stations as part of a special electricity team. This has already made a profound difference, but we want to do more!
What is coming up?
We are happy to announce that in the coming months we will renovate and expand the solar power program. Our aim is to create an accessible, reliable and sustainable energy source for every resident of the Kara Tepe and Olive Grove CampUs. That means that the solar panels should be available 24 hours a day, the whole year round, to all 2.000 CampUs residents.
How will we achieve this?
In the Kara Tepe CampUs, we will replace the solar panels in 15 stations. Many of the old panels are broken or do not efficiently convert sunlight into electricity. The new panels on the other hand, can use less hours of sunshine to provide more families with energy. By replacing the old panels in the existing 15 stations, we can extend the solar power program to a larger number of residents of the Kara Tepe CampUs.
In the Olive Grove CampUs, we will install 7 new solar panels. The panels will supplement the 10 stations that arealready located hereand power the CampUs’ street lighting. They will serve a different function however; the new panels will power the lights, heating and electricity sockets inside the residents’ homes. This is something we havenot been able to provide to the families of the Olive Grove CampUs before. That is why we are very eager to start the upscale of the solar power program!
What do we need?
Considering we are planning the renovation and expansion of the solar power program; we have also drafted an updated program outline with the project’s goal, impact and needed budget. You can find the updated program plan on GlobalGiving. To make this plan a reality, we need to raise €21.000 in the next months.
