Happy almost-spring from ETM! As our partner schools and their students are working hard to prepare for spring concert season, we are thrilled to share another report with you. This year, ETM’s programs are reaching 34,000 students in 65 partner schools across New York City. At these schools, which could not afford to provide comprehensive music programs for all students prior to their partnership with ETM, children’s lives are being lifted up through the power of music.
One such child is Eric, a student at an ETM partner school in Staten Island who struggled to connect with his peers and express himself as he entered fifth grade. He was shy and had trouble speaking up in his classes. But this year, when Eric joined the band—a vital part of the ETM music program at his school—he quickly began to change. He selected the flute as his instrument and found his musical voice under the guidance of his music teacher as he attended lessons and rehearsals. He immediately dedicated himself to his craft. “He never fails to practice, and always comes in able to play the music assigned for homework,” said his music teacher.
Beyond instrumental skills, participating in band helped Eric gain confidence in himself— as a musician and as a leader. His metamorphosis is evidenced by the fact that he has become president of the band, now enthusiastically speaking and working with his classmates. His music teacher has high hopes for Eric’s continued growth in music, in school, and beyond. The ETM music program at Eric’s school gave him access to a life-changing opportunity that helped him unlock his full potential. With his newfound poise and support from his peers and his music teacher, Eric’s future looks bright.
Eric, and thousands of students like him, will get the chance to showcase all they’ve learned this year in their upcoming spring concerts, where they’ll perform for friends, family, and community members. Your support helps provide access to general music instruction, enrichment opportunities, and ensembles, as well as training and mentoring for music teachers and engagement of whole school communities. With your help, ETM is able to improve equity in education by bringing comprehensive music education to students who otherwise would not have been able to experience its benefits. On behalf of Eric and all of the students and teachers at ETM’s partner schools, thank you for your continued generosity. Show your support for ETM by sharing this report with friends or family, and let them know how they too can make a difference!
