Three-hundred homes were gutted in a devastating fire that ripped through the Joe Slovo informal settlement in Langa, Cape Town, on 16 April 2022, leaving about 1 200 people displaced. There was a huge need to assist residents with essentials to keep warm, eat and rebuild.
HOPE Africa in partnership with the Makgoba Development Trust and Motsepe foundation set up a relief package to provide some of the much-needed supplies. Blankets, two-plate gas stoves, gas cylinders and toiletries were bought and donated to residents identified as most vulnerable. The handover event was graced by Archbishop Thabo Makgoba as he celebrated the 32nd anniversary of his ordination on Pentecost Sunday, he broke away from his sabbatical leave to oversee the handover. A lot of effort was put into organizing and setting up the supplies for the handover. HOPE Africa staff were part of the manual labour involved in heavy lifting of the supplies.
Without your contributions, HOPE Africa would not have been able to be part of this relief effort. Residents were very grateful and even smiled for the first time in a very long time. We appreciate your continued support and hope that you will be blessed with more.
