In Kolkata's underserved communities, girls often share 80-100 sq ft with 5+ family members, leaving little room to study, dream or grow. Tiljala SHED is creating a permanent learning hub for 1,000+ girls with a library, technology, science, skills, arts and sports. It will also give vulnerable boys including children of working and single parents- a safe place for shelter, food, education, activities and sports.
Many girls in Kolkata's underserved communities live with 5+ family members in just 80-100 sq. ft., leaving little space to study. Their families often face poverty and insecure work, while girls have limited access to books, computers, internet and enrichment activities. These barriers can increase risks of dropout, child labour and early marriage. For the past 18 years, Tiljala SHED's Gyan Azhar Library has helped girls learn and dream, but its rented space limits how many girls we can reach.
The project will transform our current makeshift library into a permanent, safe and well-equipped learning and skills hub for girls from underserved Kolkata communities. The new facility will provide better infrastructure, books, computers, internet, science learning, vocational skills, sports, arts and creative activities. It will enable more than 1,000 girls to learn in a safe, inspiring environment, build confidence and skills, stay engaged in education and expand their aspirations.
The project will transform the library into a permanent community knowledge hub, benefiting 1,000+ girls and reaching more children over time. Girls will shift from passive mobile use toward books, digital learning, technology and new skills, gaining access-at zero cost-to facilities often available only to wealthier families. Better infrastructure will accommodate more girls and create lasting opportunities for learning, confidence, education and future livelihoods across the community.
