Luvuyo Centre for Early Childhood Development and Care will provide early childhood education and foundation phase learning for disadvantaged children in Mamelodi between the ages of 3-Months and 6 years old. This will provide them with school readiness programmes required for enrolment in Grade 1 in their seventh year.
Luvuyo Centre Mobile Toy Library: Toys are an integral part of the development of a child - they engage a child's physical and mental activity, exercising fine and gross motor skills. Social skills are learned when children play together or share toys with other children. Caregivers often attend the play sessions with their children, offering them the opportunity to learn more about child developmental stages, early stimulation and child care. Children are provided with lunch on arrival in the afternoons. "Because when the children come from home they are always hungry and this food we feed them to stay focused. They play with more excitement."
For many children attending Toy Libraries, these will be the first toys they play with, the first books read or read to them. Caregivers are encouraged to attend play sessions with their children, offering parents/relatives the opportunity to learn more about child developmental stages, early learning stimulation and child care. Feedback from the field has been overwhelmingly positive.
The toys will be exchanged on a regular basis, to ensure a variety of play opportunities for the children. The same services to the informal settlement sites, hard to reach places in our community. ECD Centres (crèche) are often too far for the smaller children to walk to, so our mobile services brings ECD to their homes In addition to physical resources for play, we also want to do parent training called Play-to-learn. This programme improves the parents’ knowledge and skills in play-based learning at home. Parents also get the opportunity to make toys for their kids, from waste, to ensure sustainability.
