In Morelia, in Michoacan state, Mexico, hundreds of children placed in orphanages suffer trauma and emotional distress from domestic violence. Half of Michoacan's orphanages lack the means to help them process their experiences. Our project will support 60 girls from 2 orphanages, offering therapeutic artistic activities through Photovoice workshops. These girls will develop resilience, rebuild confidence, master self-care skills, heal emotional wounds, and envision futures beyond their pasts.
Over 131,000 Mexican children live in orphanages due to domestic violence (Senate of the Republic). These children carry deep psychological scars from abuse, rejection, and neglect by former caregivers. Scientific research (U.S. National Library of Medicine) confirms artistic activities provide significant therapeutic benefits, yet 50% of Michoacan's orphanages lack both creative programming and trained facilitators, leaving traumatized girls without essential emotional healing opportunities.
In partnership with Catako cultural center in Morelia, our 12-month project employs Photovoice methodology. Through guided photography workshops, girls learn to express self-protection strategies, redefine their worldview, and envision new possibilities beyond violence. The program combines artistic skill development, critical thinking exercises, women's rights education, and self-confidence building, culminating in local exhibitions where their voices can be heard and celebrated.
An initial trial confirms that this project shifts mindsets from survival to aspiration. Photography becomes a tool for resilience, enabling girls to shape futures beyond their traumatic pasts. Our focus extends beyond skill-building to emotional healing and rebuilding trust in relationships. Through community exhibitions and dialogue, these young photographers inspire sustainable change, helping break the generational cycle of violence while creating a powerful visual archive of their journeys.
