GABA HOPE FOR KIDS (GAHOK)*
*Narrative Report - August 2026*
*THEME: OUR PADS DONATION PROGRAM CONTINUES*
*1. Introduction*
Our pads donation program continues with one goal: to keep girls in school. Of our 600 children, 280 are girls, and 95 of them are in upper classes (P.3 - P.5) who have started menstruation. Without pads, they miss school, feel shame, and drop out.
*2. Why Our Pads Program Must Continue*
Before pads program:
- Girls used old clothes, banana leaves, mattress pieces
- Infections and rashes were common
- Girls missed 4-5 days every month - 45 days per year lost
- Some girls dropped out due to embarrassment when boys laughed
In Gaba slum, a packet of pads costs 5,000 UGX - mothers cannot afford.
*3. What We Have Done So Far*
*A) Monthly Distribution Continues:*
- Every month, 95 girls receive 2 packets of reusable pads / disposable pads
- No girl has missed school because of periods in Term 2, 2026
*B) Mentorship Continues:*
- Monthly girls mentorship - teaching menstrual hygiene, body changes, confidence, saying NO to early sex
- Trained female teachers and community mothers lead sessions
*C) Boys Included:*
- Boys sensitization continues - from laughing at girls to supporting sisters
*4. How Our Program Continues to Transform Lives*
1. *Sarah, P.5, 14 years:* "I used to stay home 5 days. Now I am always in class. I was top 10 this term."
2. *Attendance:* Girls attendance moved from 70% to 98% when program started.
3. *Dignity:* Girls now confident, participating in class even during periods.
4. *Health:* No more infections from dirty materials.
*5. What Remains To Keep Program Continuing*
- Monthly pads for 95 girls - need continuous supply
- Soap and knickers for proper hygiene
- Private changing room / latrine for girls - we still have no toilet
- More mentorship materials - charts, books about growing up
*6. Challenges*
- Number of girls growing - from 50 to 95 needing pads in 1 year
- Stock runs out - we depend 100% on donations
- No private washroom for girls to change at school
- Stigma from community still exists
*7. Next Steps - September to December 2026*
- Continue monthly distribution without break
- Train 10 older girls as peer mentors to support younger girls
- Make our own reusable pads with mothers group for sustainability
- Build first girls changing room on our Wakiso land
*8. Appreciation & Appeal*
Our pads donation program continues because you continue with us.
