Story of a Change Maker

Greetings from Gram Vikas Trust!

While talking about the development has been done in the recent years, we forgot to look in the rural India. The village where the real Indian people are still living under developed or not even on the developing stage. Whereas the education level and the mindset of the people are still not allowing the people to come out from the rigid system. Most of the families in the rural areas are still not able to think about the future of them and their children.

If we talk about Gujarat, and especially about Bharuch and Narmada districts, many villages are still thinking about higher education for girls is not worthy. Still the parents arrange marriages of their young girls in the very early age, and the routine remains continue. And problems like divorce, bad habits, parenting and other social problems remain as it is. Organization like Gram Vikas Trust (GVT), working in this areas since longer time is not only believes in providing the materials for education but focuses on how the parents/society can change the mindset and understand the important of education.

In this report, Reshma’s (name changed) story need to be highlighted. As Reshma has suffered a lot for getting education outside of her village. Reshma’s father is alcoholic and working as laborer in village’s fields, whereas her mother is also alcoholic, and help in household work. Reshma has three elder siblings and they have not studied after 8th class. Reshma was bright in studies and wanted to study further after completing 8 standard in her village. But her parents were not agreed for this. Reshma’s friend was also wanted to study further but she was also facing the same problem like Reshma. Both the girls tried hard for the higher education. Both the girls contacted their principal of the village school, and he motivated both the parents for girls’ education. Somehow both the parents agreed for the higher education.

Reshma in the young age has decided to make some changes in her village, and she have started a small tuition class for the 1 to 8 class children at free of cost after school hours. GVT helped Reshma for settling up a small library and also helped both the girls for their school related materials. “My father has not able to study, even my mother which reflects in our upbringing and many other examples in my village. But I will help my sisters to get education, which may help them to think different.” Shared by Reshma with GVT’s officer.

Generosity!

In this report Gram Vikas Trust (GVT) wants to share project update and how our girls are doing in their studies. This year GVT is supporting 38 girls for their studies, who are coming from rural poor background and from tribal community. Most of the girls’ parents are against further education of their girl child, and the second major reason is lack of interest and/or awareness about importance of education.

Among these 38 girls, 14 are doing their graduates in Science, Arts and Commerce. 12 girls will come in 12^th standard in different streams (Arts, Commerce and Science). 6 girls are doing GNM Nursing in different years, 3 girls are doing Basic Compute and English speaking course (One Year), and 3 other girls will come in 11^th standard this academic year.

The cost of supporting these 38 girls is approximately 4,00,000 INR for their educational aid only and around other 1 lakh for other cost such as travelling, other school/college materials. As GVT is supporting such tribal poor girls for their education, we have seen some changes in the society, especially in the tribal community. Parents are thinking about their children’s education. And also some parents have started supporting their girl children in sending their children to school regularly and take care of their children’s education.

The journey is not yet completed, GVT has seen many difficult situation and other barriers in making the girl children educated. But with the hope of educated society GVT is trying its best for the end result. As the journey is not completed, many more girls still not able to continue their studies GVT is planning to support more girls.

I want to become a Nurse!

In this report GVT would like to enlighten a story of a young girl who have fought for her career with her family and the villagers. She has break the rigid mentality of the community who were strongly against the girl’s higher education. Badlapur (name changed) is a typically tribal village where we cannot found a single person who have completed his/her 12 class. There are few youth who could able to complete their 10 but could not clear the examination and joined agriculture. The girls of the village are able to study up to 8 class and after that they do not allow to take admission in higher secondary school. As per a small survey in the village only three girls have started going to study for class 9, and out of these three one could able to complete her 12 and two girls have dropped out after 10.

Reshma (name changed) is the one who have completed her 12 standard from a nearby town. And now she has started her GNM nursing course. Initially it was very tuff for Reshma, as her two friends were accompanying her but due to family pressure both the girls got dropped out from school and then it was very much difficult for Reshma to travel for the school from her village. In her 11 class some school teachers helped her for the boarding school, as her parents were not happy with her daily up and down for schooling.

Somehow Reshma able to complete her 12 class with good grades, and she wished to take admission in GNM nursing course, but the fees were very high and also her family members were not ready for her higher education as well as the community members were also opposing for her education. But Reshma did not gave up in this situation. Her teacher contacted GVT to help Reshma for further education.

While interacting with Reshma, she shared that, “the village people are against my education while my own family are not supporting me but I am not going to stop. If I will give up no other girls from my village will allow to study further. I want to become a nurse and will change the mindset by my passion.”

GVT appreciate the passion and courage of Reshma. Let us help such young girls in fulfilling their dreams, to change their lives.
