While the mercury soars in the south Indian city of Chennai, so does the spirit of giving among U&I volunteer tutors there! School is out for the summer and U&I classes wrapped up with fun end-of-year parties, but our volunteers are not quite done yet.
In Chennai, one of the hottest cities in India, U&I tutors are still meeting to see how they can up their game for the coming academic year. Every week, tutors get together in a forum they call Meet. Think. Solve.
They spend the day innovating and learning from each other to make their teaching more effective. The volunteers use this opportunity to work on "creative banks," a pool of resources that helps teachers in their U&I classrooms.
"I expect a community of strong leadership to be built during our venture. This community will be the base for the massive growth that U&I Chennai is looking at in the coming years," says Karthikeyan, one of the Chennai tutors.
Deepan, another volunteer in Chennai, agrees. "Basically MTS for me is a platform for the teachers this year to come together to collaborate and improve the way we teach next year," he says.
This is an initiative entirely pioneered by the volunteer tutors. While U&I management plans volunteer-training sessions through the year, it is refreshing and heartwarming to see volunteers lead the change on their own. This is how we know that we are building communities of change. Because change comes from within, as these committed volunteers have proved.
We can't wait to see what ideas the Meet. Think. Solve. team comes up with to continue creating an impact that will change a child's life forever.
