Summary

Sun Books brings learning to children in rural and underserved communities through solar-powered devices loaded with engaging, curriculum-based lessons. In areas where books and learning materials are scarce, these digital tools inspire children to learn and dream again. Each tablet, powered by sunlight, supports up to 10 children weekly, reaching thousands each year. It turns makeshift classrooms into hubs of discovery and hope, giving disadvantaged learners a chance to rebuild their future.

Challenge

In parts of Northern Nigeria where conflict has displaced millions of children from formal schooling, learning has now become a daily struggle. Many of them currently live in IDP camps with little or no access to quality education. They take lessons in makeshift structures where volunteer teachers work without textbooks or basic materials. Deprived of engaging and effective learning tools, these children risk becoming a lost generation - trapped in a cycle of poverty and social exclusion.

Solution

Sun Books is expanding its mission to support children displaced by conflict by addressing learning gaps in five IDP camps in Northern Nigeria. The project uses solar-powered, offline devices loaded with culturally relevant storybooks, lessons, and videos. Teachers receive digital training and ongoing mentoring, enabling interactive learning despite scarce resources. This system transforms sunlight energy into a source of hope, knowledge, and opportunity for the displaced children.

Long-Term Impact

This project brings hope to children in five IDP camps whose education has been disrupted by conflict and displacement. Despite learning in derelict classrooms with no books or desks, they remain eager to learn. Our intervention provides durable, solar-powered devices that open a world of discovery for them whilst also empowering their teachers. By improving literacy through digital education, the project helps them imagine new possibilities and also reassures them that they are not forgotten.
