Making Reading Accessible for Every Child

By Afolabi Adelakun | Country Manager SunBooks

Give a Gift of Reading – Sun Books Initiative

Sun Books continues to bring learning opportunities to children in rural and underserved communities through solar-powered, offline digital devices loaded with engaging, curriculum-based lessons. In regions where books and learning materials are scarce, particularly in conflict-affected areas of Northern Nigeria, these tools are transforming makeshift classrooms into spaces of discovery, hope, and renewed possibility.

This project is currently supporting children in five IDP camps, including learners at Sharing Prosperity School in Kuchingoro IDP Camp, Abuja. Each solar-powered tablet supports up to 10 children weekly and reaches thousands of learners annually. Teachers are also receiving digital training and ongoing mentoring, enabling more interactive and effective learning despite limited resources.

Access to digital learning tools is transforming how children engage with education. Equipping young readers with the right technology means giving them access to a world beyond their classroom walls. A single donation puts a reading tool in a child’s hands and opens a world they did not have before.

Our learners are actively engaging with foundational literacy concepts such as the “Magic e” rule, which helps children become stronger readers and more confident spellers by understanding how vowel sounds change within words. These moments are building not only reading skills but also confidence, curiosity, creativity, and hope for the future.

Nearly 9 in 10 children in Sub-Saharan Africa are unable to read and understand a simple text by age 10. This learning crisis threatens both individual futures and the broader social and economic development of communities. Literacy is more than an educational milestone—it is the foundation for lifelong learning, opportunity, and active participation in society.

The long-term impact of this initiative is to ensure that children affected by displacement and conflict are not left behind. By providing durable solar-powered learning devices and supporting teachers, the project helps children rebuild their education journey and imagine new possibilities for their future.

We invite continued support to expand access to quality learning materials, trained teachers, and safe learning environments. Together, we can ensure every child has the opportunity to read, learn, and thrive. The story of Africa’s future begins with literacy.
