The current flood crisis in Kerala, India
More than 1,000,000 Keralites have been displaced due to unprecedented, rains, floods and landslides in the southern Indian state of Kerala. The vigorous southwest monsoon has left a trail of destruction across Kerala, killing at least 300 people so far. The flooding damaged the infrastructure of around 10,000 km or roads and 20,000 houses. The dams were overflowing, and the release of water from dams extensively damaged the districts around Idukki and Ernakulam. There is also flooding in the northern districts of Malappuram, Kozhikode, Palakkad and Wayanad. Being hilly regions, they also witnessed severe landslides and roadblocks. Around 150,000 people have moved to various camps in the state. Roads have been cut off and with power shutdown, a drinking water crisis is expected.
bB’s team received numerous calls to bring in Aid. Many people on the ground advised against bringing weatherHYDEs. We are therefore going in with other household items, such as utensils. Our team is expected to finish distribution by 9th of September after which we will have some new pictures to share. Our partners in Kerala are Jeevana Samridhi, a social charitable trust (Reg.no. 409/2006). The project “Nalla Ayalkaran” of Jeevana Samridhi was formed to reach out to the rain-ravaged people. They are presently focusing on the people returning back home having lost everything.
GlobalGiving donors can note that their funds are committed to weatherHYDEs in India. They are not being used for additional relief work that we are doing. If you would want to support other work, you can drop us a note.
Around the same time, Lombok in Indonesia experienced multiple earthquakes, severely damaging the infrastructure on the island. We are working in collaboration with various partners and taking in weatherHYDEs for 150 victims.
