"Girls with Potential" project by the NGO CARE Peru contributes to girls and young women from rural and vulnerable areas of Peru completing their studies with well-being and continuing their professional development. The project focus with students on four components: socio-emotional skills, comprehensive sexual education, financial education with a STEAM approach, and life project planning. The project empowers students to break gender stereotypes and achieve their educational goals.
Our main challenge is to generate a positive change in the comprehensive well-being of girls and women by breaking gender stereotypes that limit their well-being and educational trajectories. Given that in rural areas girls study on average only up to second grade, finding that the teenage pregnancy rate is 12%. Furthermore, 41% of women in rural areas do not have their own income and 67% of the cases of violence were towards them, of which 37% are sexual abuse.
The project implements a systemic and comprehensive strategy incorporating the participation of the educational community (students, teachers, families, directors, community leaders, etc. ) that guarantees the commitment to the comprehensive development of its students. The thematic axes are implemented according to who it is aimed at, that is, a teacher training program, a training program for each level of students (3rd, 4th and 5th secondary school), workshops for families and the community,
"Girls with Potential" measures impact indicators related to comprehensive well-being and gender equality, which have been increasing throughout the intervention; In the same way, the teenage pregnancy rate has been reduced, which contributes to the completion of secondary school and the continuity of their educational trajectories. It also manages agreements with local educational management institutions; and other alliances, which compromises the continuity of the project.
