The Future Begins with Opportunity

By Debbie | Partner in Africa

There is a quiet revolution taking place in Zimbabwe—one that does not begin in corporate boardrooms or expensive classrooms. Instead, it begins in greenhouses, chicken runs, vegetable gardens and pig pens, where vulnerable young women are discovering that their future can look very different from their past.

At the Sandra Jones Centre in Bulawayo, we believe that every girl deserves more than survival. She deserves dignity, opportunity and hope. Most importantly, she deserves practical skills that will allow her to build a vibrant and independent future.  For many of the girls who come through our doors, life has already been painfully difficult. Some have experienced abuse, poverty or exploitation. Others have grown up believing that opportunities are meant for somebody else. Too often, vulnerable young women face limited choices and few pathways to independence.

This is where vocational agricultural training becomes life changing.  Our program is about far more than farming. It is about restoration, empowerment and creating genuine pathways out of poverty.  Each year, young women join our program to learn practical agricultural and small business skills that can immediately translate into income generation. They are trained in broiler chicken production, piggery management, greenhouse production, field crops and conservation agriculture techniques suited to Zimbabwe’s challenging climate.

The training is intentionally hands-on. Girls learn how to manage broiler projects from day-old chicks through to market stage. Thanks to generous supporters who provide 1,000 broiler chicks and feed, the programme serves a double purpose—feeding children in our residential care while also becoming a living classroom for vocational students.  The piggery and greenhouses offer equally valuable learning opportunities. Students gain experience managing livestock and growing crops such as peppers, carrots, tomatoes, beans and beetroot. Yet the learning does not stop at production. Produce is sold at local markets and roadside stalls, giving the girls firsthand experience in marketing, budgeting and entrepreneurship. Older students mentor new trainees, creating a culture of leadership and encouragement.

The results speak for themselves.  Many graduates have gone on to begin small enterprises or support their families through income generated from their new skills. One young woman, Sikhulile Nyathi, began with only 50 chicks. Through determination and reinvestment, she has grown her project while helping sustain her family and continuing her education.

When we invest in girls, we do more than teach agriculture. We strengthen households, improve food security and nurture future leaders and entrepreneurs.  The vision at the Sandra Jones Centre is not merely to train girls to farm. It is to help them discover their worth and realise they are capable of shaping their own future.

That future begins with opportunity.

It begins with training.

And it begins when we choose to believe that every girl deserves the chance to build a vibrant future.
