The pandemic could trap a generation of girls in a cycle of poverty and deprive Guatemala the talents and ideas that girls have to develop.
The future is still uncertain and challenging for everyone. For the girls, boys and young people of Guatemala it is more than that. Years of progress are unraveling, especially for the country's girls and adolescents. When they do not go to school, in addition to falling behind in their schooling, they lose a space where they can be safe and develop fully; contributing reasons for many of them not returning to school, even if all restrictions are lifted.
They are facing higher risks of violence every day and that is why it keeps us going and not stopping!
We continue to work tirelessly in favor of girls, adolescents and young women in Guatemala. To date, we have benefited more than 265,000 people affected by the COVID-19 crisis, in 600 communities in the country, delivering 8,800 food rations and 37,000 hygiene kits, in Alta Verapaz, Baja Verapaz, Escuintla, Jalapa and Quiché. In addition, health supplies, biosafety, and informative material are provided to the personnel of the Guatemalan Health System, in areas where Plan maintains active operations.
We have rethought the programs implemented before COVID-19, to first ensure the safety and health of girls and adolescents, and thus be able to restart our work in favor of their education, food and nutritional security, health and hygiene.
But that is not enough, we need you to continue supporting the families most affected by the crisis. Donate now.
