NORMALCY DESPITE COVID-19 NEW NORMALS

Delivery of Sanitary Towels for Girls

The threat of COVID-19 to completely close us down is now over and things are returning to normalcy despite the fact that we are living under the new normal. We have continued to assist our girls by giving them lifeskills through crotcheting training, provision of sanitary towel, counselling and free provision of clean water for both domestic and drinking as well as food through our Feeding Program. During the reporting period between May and September 2021, we have provided them with sanitary towels, food, lifeskills and counselling. Feeding program is an ongoing provision since the resumption of schools from January 2021 upto now.

As a result of these we have not experienced any drop outs and infact girls are the majority in both primary and secondary schools. Despite this fact, they are still the most vulnerable unlike boys hence our concern and appeal that our supporters and donors help us continue to give them incentive to complete school. If we can get regular monthly givers, it will be assured way of their successful completion.

We therefore sincerely appeal to our donors to come in generously to help us meet a target of US$15,000 during the forth coming GlobalGiving fundraising campaign starting from 13th - 17th September 2021 begining from Monday the 13th. Any money given upto $50 will be matched 50% by the GlobalGiving. This means if we raise $10,000 then we will earn $5,000 more so long as we give in $50 or less. We target 200 donors who will each give $50. Please be part of these and mobilize your friends to help us do the same.

DETERMINED TO FINISH WELL

Our determined girls came back and over 90% re-opened when the Kenyan Government resumed the opening of schools in the beginning of January 2021 only to be rudely interrupted once again with another lockdown from 19th March 2021. Luckily during this reporting period, the Government has once again opened schools with strict adherance to the COVID-19 rules on 11th May 2021.

Beginning this week (17th May 2021) we have seen a number of our girls coming back to school and the actual number are yet to be known in the next two weeks. Among 152,000 Kenyan teenage girls reported pregnant during the first lockdown only 5 from our schools were reported not coming back but whether due to pregnancy or some other issues, we are yet to establish.

We want to thank you and some other local donors for enabling us to raise a total of US$3,461.78 of which US$ 2,456.36 were donation from you and our other supporters with a matching of US$1,005.48 from the GlobalGiving Foundation for "Help 100 Girls to Complete School project" during the March 2021 campaign. We received another US$1,496.00 as one among the eight (8) organizations in the cohort of Girlfund. We will continue to assist the girls in giving them lifeskills through crotcheting training, provision of free clean water for both domestic use and drinking.

As soon as they have all come back in the next two weeks, we intend to purchase some sanitary towels for the girls and provide according to the needs some eductaion writing materials. Provision of food is a necessity for these girls to complete their education and we have already purchased items for the feeding program which will be enough for the entire term.

We are glad that despite the problems of the COVID-19 pandemic which had been a real threat for our survival, things are settling down and our wish is that we shall have no more interruptions due to this pandemic. We continue to appeal to our supporters and well wishers for their consistent commitment every month to enables us continue giving these girls hope and ensure they complete their education.

SLOWLY GIRLS ARE REPORTING BACK

Our girls Back to School

With the full resumption of schools by the Kenya Government, after two weeks we have not received back all the giirls that have been in our schools. This is not strange since in normal cases even when there is no Corona pandemic, the poor in the slums change their status of residence depending on their economic status. Some even travel upcountry and never come back to the city if they get some better livelihood in the rural area or some are not back because of lack of fare. But we have began in an encouraging note.

We are yet to know if any of our girls are among those 152,000 Kenyan teenage girls who became pregnant during the lockdown. Our policy is that even if they are pregnant they need to finish their education. Education being the basic right of every citizen need a combined effort to ensure these precious girls finish the school.

During this reporting period September - November we received a total US$1,185 mainly from Girl Fund account since we are among the eight (8) organizations in the cohort of Girlfund. Whenever we could manage we have continued to assist the girls through giving them crotcheting skills, provision of free clean water for both domestic use and drinking. Water provision has enabled the poor to improve on their health and cleanliness. We have provided our compound as a venue for continuous self study for those who could come.

We are glad that despite the hard 10 months, most of the staff are back and we have managed to replace the three who did not make it back. We continue to appeal to our supporters and well wishers to commit at least US$10 every month and enables us continue giving these girls hope despite the devastating effect of COVID-19 which added already to their desperate situation of gender inequality, abuse and other disadvantages girls already suffer. It will be your joy and mine, if we can shape such lives like the lives of the two girls I have taken a photo with (see the photos) who have gone upto university level. I am so proud of them that now they are self reliant and are giving back to the community. Join me in doing this noble work.
