The Girl Power Radio Hour is Growing to Reach More Adolescents and Communities in Central Uganda

By Audrey Kanyesigye | Country Director

Girl Power Radio Hour is growing!
Girl Power Radio Hour is growing!

In response to the COVID 19 pandemic, the JLMC Uganda team successfully pivoted its Girl Power Project® activities from in person community engagements to an innovative weekly radio show. The Girl Power Radio Hour innovation has since become an effective mode of delivering critical girls empowerment topics from JLMC’s evidence-based curriculum. The Girl Power Radio Hour is providing opportunities to feature superstar adolescent girls and local experts, while engaging the community through these conversation on radio, allowing JLMC Uganda to expand its reach up to a million girls every month.

Due to the successful pilot of this radio innovation during the peak of the pandemic, we have partnered with BEAT FM of Capital Radio one of the most listened to English and Luganda radio station in Uganda to capture a much larger audience of the entire Central Region of Uganda, including Kampala, Masaka, Mukono, Luwero, Nakasongola, Nakeseke and beyond with the potential to reach many others even globally through their online streaming access.

On the 5th May the Girl Power Radio Hour hosted Angela Nakafeero the Commissioner for Gender and Women Affairs at Uganda's Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development where she shared with the massive audience tuning in about the current situation surrounding gender in the country, the key gender issues that the government is prioritizing and how they are addressing these issues. The primary way in which Uganda is addressing gender issues is by focusing on financial empowerment for women, which is a set of skill sets (budgeting, savings and entrepreneurship) offered by JLMC's evidence based Girl Power Project ® curriculum.

We are grateful to Angela Nakafeero for her time and wisdom on the topic and for the Women Rocking Business and Feminine Power communities for their generous contributions towards expanding the radio program.
