Lots of smiles, as children receive many benefits at Karuna-Shechen's preschool programs...
When we saw preschool children in underserved Indian villages sitting in sparse rooms with little or no stimuli and no interaction, we decided to act — and we invited you to join us.
Together, we are ensuring that children in critical developmental stages receive engaging cognitive education. After training, teachers have organized preschool rooms into four spaces:
- Quiet area: a quiet space for rest and reading
- Construction space: games, blocks etc.
- Imaginative play: dolls, kitchen etc.
- Space representation: cars, figurines, small animals etc.
Drawing and coloring activities are also organized, as are outdoor games and activities such as hoops and balls.
"Our preschool has completely changed since Karuna-Shechen's involvement," says Krishnadevi, a classroom assistant. "Children have fun, and they learn so much better through play."
To bring extra smiles to the children:
Village women in our entrepreunerial training program are sewing soft cuddly toys, which are then distributed to the preschools.
“I really like making these toys,” says Chandni, one of the seamstresses. “They light up the faces of children!"
The impact of the project so far is heartwarming, and it is about to get even better: we have scheduled a new training for October, where more preschool teachers will learn to lead educational play designed to be fun while also helping to develop young minds.
We will continue to update you on the progress, and we thank you for bringing the gift of play to young children in remote communities of Jharkhand!
With gratitude,
Grace Alfiero
