“Play is the foundation of learning, creativity, self-expression, and constructive problem-solving. It’s how children wrestle with life to make it meaningful.” —Susan Linn, Psychiatrist
Seasons Greetings from Team Toybank!
With 34 percent of people aged between 15 and 29 years, India has the world’s largest adolescent and youth population. Although it is often assumed that this will result in a pool of workers who can contribute to India’s economic growth, the reality is quite different. A majority of young people in India either do not have the relevant education and skills to be meaningfully employed or suffer from the absence of enabling opportunities. This is particularly true for youth from marginalised communities.
While numerous studies have shown that Play is vital for children’s holistic development and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child's Article 31 recognizes every child’s Right to Play, in India this fundamental right still remains unrecognised, undervalued and unadopted. This is especially true for the marginalised communities for whom the benefits of Play remain an unachievable luxury. With your support, Team Toybank has continued to create safe and playful learning environments for 75,000 children across 12 districts in Maharashtra and 4 states and 1 Union Territory in India.
Our programme guides and supports 2,822 teachers through 646 support groups and 575 Play2Learn centres and we are partnered with 331 government schools throughout rural and urban Maharashtra (as of 31st December 2022). We set up Play2Learn Centres in partnership with Non-profit Organisations, Community Based Organisations (CBOs), Government and low-income semi-government schools, and Government and Non-government CICs (Child in Institutional Care).
We are glad to share updates of our work from October 2022 to December 2022. We look forward to continuing to create safe, happy learning spaces with opportunities for them to learn and holistically develop through Play!
These sheets are designed in-house by a skilled play-content developer and include age-appropriate content aligning with their academic curriculum and developmental goals. Through the play kit, the children improved their:
“Toybank’s training helped me understand the need for and importance of learning through play. The most interesting part of play-based learning is how it engages students and helps them concentrate for long periods of time. I want to use this teaching not only at school but also to help my daughter,” said Teacher at Mumbai Public School Aziz Baug, Play2Learn centre U409.
“The Toybank teacher training course was really helpful for me and I took a lot of learnings from here, which I can use in my class. It will be really fruitful to my children,” shared a teacher from Mumbai Public School Bhavani Shankar (CBSE), Play2Learn centre U411 in an interview post the training.
After a needs-based assessment for Play centres, Team Toybank sent new games and toys to 34 Play2Smile centres (partner hospitals that are part of our Play2Smile Programme, which focuses on reducing stress and anxiety in children undergoing treatments or accompanying their caregivers) across Mumbai and 62 Play2Learn centres in Urban and Rural Maharashtra.
Story of Resilience: Play2Learn Centres—a safe and nurturing environments
At three, Rohit (name changed) has seen a toxic home environment where alcoholism, abuse and violence is common. With his father in jail for the last two years, his mother single-handedly takes care of him and works as a rag picker to provide for the whole family. They live with his maternal grandmother and uncle, who is an alcoholic and Rohit has witnessed him hit his mother on multiple occasions. With their house made of a temporary plastic structure, there is no possibility for Rohit to be away from the violence or the influence of alcohol and tobacco consumed by his uncle and grandmother.
When the Anganwadi (preschool) teacher visited Rohan’s house, she counselled Rohan’s family to send him to the Anganwadi (preschool), so that he could be away from the unhealthy environment for at least a few hours a day.
When Rohit started coming to the Anganwadi (preschool), he would frequently fall ill, had a low attention span and deteriorating health. He struggled to adapt and blend in with the other children. The teacher began to spend time with him, often playing Toybank’s games with him to help him feel comfortable. It has taken Rohit some time to get used to the Anganwadi as a safe space, but according to the teacher, playing the games regularly played a significant role in this change. She strongly emphasised the need to create a child-friendly environment for children like Rohan.
Now, Rohit comes to the Anganwadi regularly, is dressed properly, and is one of the most active students there. He willingly asks for games and toys and takes initiative to play with the other children. It speaks volumes about the glaring need for programmes like Play2Learn, that help to create a safe space for children from difficult circumstances, and impact their overall development and well-being, as well as help them develop a love for learning
—Case Story shared by Toybank's Programme Officer in charge of Samajratna Shivaji Rao (Bapu) Shendge Vidyalaya, Play2Learn Centre U327.
Creating accessible spaces for play-based learning and empowering teachers on the importance of play will ensure vulnerable children a safe environment to develop life skills needed to thrive in our ever-changing world. Together we can build a world where children’s Right to Play is promoted, giving all children a chance for a healthy childhood.
Thank you for helping 75,000 at-risk children across Maharashtra state, India continue to develop their socio-emotional skills, refine their cognitive abilities and holistically develop through play.
Happy Toybanking!
