The Van Has Finally Arrived!

By Sharon Doherty | Project Leader

We are pleased to announce that the long awaited passenger van, gifted to EEESMA School for the Deaf by way of a grant from the San Miguel Community Foundation has arrived! The brand new 14-seater 2023 Nissan Urvan will be put into service very soon.

Javier, the Jewelry Making Workshop Instructor, employed by EEESMA for over seven years now, has agreed to take on the position of Chief Driver with the responsibility of driving the students to and from school each day. He has acquired a special drivers licence and certificate to fulfill the legal requirements of the position. Now we only have to finalize the acquisition of insurance and registration as a private transport vehicle for transportation of children.

As a trial, the first designated route for the van will be starting at the city of Dolores Hidalgo, 45 kilometers away from San Miguel, where eight students of various ages live. Driving down to San Miguel along the Dolores Hidalgo highway will then allow Javier to pick up five more students who live in rural communities along the way. There are many advantages to having this service for the children. It means they won't have to walk a long distance each morning to catch the public bus, they will meet the van on the school's schedule rather than waking before dawn to follow the public bus schedule and it won't be necessary for their parents to accompany them each day, often a hardship for them. The older students will watch over the younger ones during the trip. A win-win for all concerned!

We are excited to learn how this new venture helps get the kids to school over the trial period of the next several weeks. We will be back to you soon with a report and photos of how things are progressing.

It's a very exciting time for EEESMA School for the Deaf and the students who travel a long distance to attend school. Thank you for supporting this very worthwhile project and helping to make it a reality.
