Through your generosity almost $10,000 has been raised toward the $30,000 goal of the Getting Deaf Kids to School in Mexico Project. Getting students to school and home again every day is a challenge, however we know that this challenge, having garnered your energy and enthusiasm, is well on its way to being overcome.
A new 15 seat passenger van, financed with an amazing grant from a local foundation, is on order from a reputable San Miguel de Allende car dealership but has yet to be delivered; delayed due to supply chain issues. EEESMA expects to receive the van in early 2023 when students and their families from Dolores Hidalgo and other communities surrounding San Miguel de Allende will have the added comfort of knowing the kids will be picked up and dropped off from home in a safe, new vehicle driven by a caring, qualified driver. It can’t happen soon enough!
The funds raised for this project will be used to operate the van and pay the driver which is estimated at $10,000 per year over three years. Donated funds remain in a dedicated bank account waiting to be used for this purpose alone. In the meantime, students continue to come to school by way of public bus transportation. We anxiously look forward to the day when getting to school will be made a lot easier for the students while lessening the concern for everyone knowing that families will no longer be required to depend on public transportation. We still have a way to go to achieve our fundraising goal, with the first year of operating funds having been raised but have no doubt that we will get there!
Thanks again for your stalwart support and generosity. You are truly champions for the kids!
