Summary

The Rohingya refugees who have fled to Bangladesh need food, shelter, clean water and medical aid, but they need more than that - they desperately need accurate information on how they can access these services and they need to know what is happening around them. Internews' Humanitarian Information Service is poised to make sure people know what help is available and where they can access it, to evaluate and interpret rumors, to ensure people affected by crisis are able to make informed choices.

Challenge

Since August 2017, almost 700,000 Rohingya refugees have fled to Bangladesh. There is no accessible Rohingya language media, leaving the Rohingya population of up to 1.5 million reliant on information only available in languages other than their own. Getting the right information can mean the difference between life and death. Affected communities need information about how to reconnect with family members or what aid services may be available for them.

Solution

Internews' Rohingya Humanitarian Information Service (RHIS) provides timely and widely accessible information, clear and uniform messaging to the refugee population on humanitarian assistance, and strengthens Communication with Communities (CwC) to include guidance on access to essential needs such as food, shelter, aid and other services for Rohingya populations. This includes dedicated information hubs in the camps, digital channels, and training bilingual community correspondents.

Long-Term Impact

Internews works with humanitarian agencies and local communities to make sure people know what help is available and where they can access it, to evaluate and interpret rumours, to ensure people affected by crisis are able to make accurately informed choices about their own recovery. Your support can ensure that other aid on the ground matches the needs of the Rohingya refugees by strengthening the communication lines between agencies and the community.
