Securing the Distribution Lines
To date, the project fund is still far way short of the needed amount for the solar pump, its mounting frame fixtures, solar panels and electrical ancilliaries. However, while at that, the community members are helping secure the other components which were partly SIBAT’s counterpart contribution to the project especially in its installation.
SIBAT and the community has just put up the improvements of the well and seeing to it that the installed distribution system such as the pipes are secured. The community members are preparing as well the tail end distribution connections for the various tapstands to be constructed within the community household clusters so that they can draw water closer to their homes.
Improvement of the Tank Reservoir
Some finishing touches have been made to the damaged tank reservoir. The tank walls were reinforced with concrete and the inner compartments were cleaned up with debris. Two tank tower posts were re-enforced with steel structures after the corroded ones bent out from Yolanda’s strong force . Work teams from the community were formed and artisans volunteered labor to finish the job. The community also added concrete to the base structure after soil foundation weakened from two typhoons last year aside from erosion brought about by Yolanda.
Deepening of the Well
A second deepening of the well went underway after villagers noticed that there are still a good amount of silts that need to be extracted. During the first and second quarter of this year when El Nino extended the drought period, it was obvious that the water supply ran extremely low compared to previous dry months. Hence, the villagers took extra work to dig up more silts to reach deeper water level to get enough water.
Manual Water Hauling
While awaiting for the solar pump, the villagers continue to manually draw water and queued up still to get their share. With the slightly deepened well, water comes up clearer though as of this writing, testing for biological contaminants has to be done yet. It was also noticeable that adequate amount of water is available now that the onset of the rains has come. This is highly positive for the villagers as they can fetch more than enough for their household needs.
Accessing other Support
SIBAT continuous also to approach possible co-funders of the project like the LGUS and other International Non-Government Organizations especially those that are still continuing their rehabilitation and recovery efforts in order to pool additional and complementary funds to expedite the completion of the project. It is hoped that through this, the community villagers will soon have an efficient water distribution facility to address their foremost need which is water access from their rehabilitated system.
