Helping The Gambia Even More

By JahSun | CEO

And so, the current news is that Water Charity superstar, creator of the Gambia Lifewater Initiative, and driving force of this Global Giving page--Jeremy Mak--is finally moving on to other activities.  As the previous update made clear, he has been doing work for Water Charity in Colombia recently, completing a very worthy clean water project for a village in the rural highlands above Baranquilla.

He will be missed.  But still, the effort in The Gambia, goes on.  Well past the initial 15 villages, Water Charity continues to do a plethora of projects there, many with new Peace Corps volunteers helming them. Click Here for a current listing of the individual projects we have underway, and being completed in this little English speaking nation.

Continued donations to this page will go to support these efforts. The Gambia has no lack of villages that need improved access to clean water and sanitation facilities.  As I write this, the hope that the new government might bring stability and allow for a greater focus on health and wellbeing teeters on the edge, with things seeming to be falling back into all-too-familiar conflict. And, as usual, it is the poor people who suffer the most.

Donations to this Global Giving page (or any of the individual projects you can find in the link above), will go a long way, as Water Charity is among the only organizations in the world that puts 96% of funds raised directly into projects. Despite what others may say, the industry standard is sadly close to 10%.  People will tell you that 100% of YOUR donation will go to a certain project, while those donations only amount to 5% of the money they raise. What they don't say is that the large grants and major donors' funds are going towards their bloated staff, expensive flights around the world, gala benefits, and cushy salaries.  In comparison, Water Charity is nearly entirely volunteer run... we have local people manage projects, use local labor, and if we fly anywhere... we pay for it out of our pockets.

To see Jeremy's accumulated work, aside from the detailed updates you find here, you can go HERE.

I encourage all of you here to peruse our voluminous website and see the incredible, efficient and sustainable work we are doing all over the world http://watercharity.org and sign up for our mailing list.  Share our projects on social media; follow us, like us and all that good stuff.. it helps.  Most of all, keep supporting projects like this one!
