November 2014 Gambia Lifewater Project Report

New Bluepump in Madina Wallom
New Bluepump in Madina Wallom

Dear Friends,

Happy Thanksgiving! The Gambia Lifewater Project would like to thank you for your tremendous generosity, which has allowed us to scale up Phase 2 of our clean water project! To date, we have fixed 40 handpumps in 24 villages, but local communities need more durable and lasting solutions to their clean water needs.

Phase 2 focuses on replacing ageing Mark II handpumps with a more robust and simpler-to-maintain handpump called the Bluepump. These newer pumps have no moving parts, are easier to use, produce more water (lower wait times to fetch water), and are much stronger than the breakdown-prone Mark IIs. study by Oxfam found that the Bluepump is arguably the best handpump on the market today.

So far, we have replaced 3 Mark IIs with Bluepumps, and we'll do many more. With your help, we have raised enough funds on GlobalGiving to purchase 2 Bluepumps!

But that's not all - we've just heard from our Gambian partner that the Fairwater Foundation may donate up to 4 pumps, for a total of 6 new Bluepumps to be installed in April 2015! Our next handpump installation drive will serve the following villages: Sara Bakary, Sare Sambel, and Sowe Kunda, as well as the District Health Center in Dankunku.

By installing these Bluepumps, we will improve clean water access to more than 2,500 women, children, and men!

This could not have been done without your support. Thanks again for your kindness - we will keep you updated on our progress.

All the best,

Jeremy
