                                                                 Report to GlobalGiving

1.    Title of the project        :    Gaja cyclone relief measures for 200 families

2.    Project area                  :     Pudukottai district, Tamilnadu, India.

3.    Target beneficiaries     :     200 families affected by gaja cyclone

4.    Services provided        :      a) Notebooks and stationeries for 10 children

                                                     b) Dry ration supplies for 5 families

                                                     c) Sports materials for 1 school

5.    Duration of the project:     December 2018 to February 20196.

6. Description of the activities carried out:

  • Notebooks and stationeries for 10 children:

For the children who had lost their notebooks, books, other education stationeries during the Gaja cyclone that happened in November 2018, the greatest need for continuing their education was to get at least a minimum of their educational materials back. Hence we were able to support 10 children with the education supports like notebooks, pen, pencil, geometry box, text books etc which motivated them to continue their studies and leave for the school on time. Besides we were able to support these children with a bottle of energy drinks like Boost and few biscuit packets within the amount of Rs.5000/-in Toto. However small the support was, these children showed their gratitude and thanks to the GlobalGiving and the sponsors. We are sure these children got back to their normal life, continuation of studies, scoring higher marks in the forthcoming public exams etc.

  •  Dry ration supplies for 5 families:

All the Gaja cyclone affected people in Mayanoor belonging to Pudukottai district were in need of ration supplies since they lost all the assets including housing, domestic animals, standing crops, well grown trees, household articles etc. But we were able to provide the ration for at least 2 weeks consisting of 25kg of rice, coffee powder, sugar, cooking oil, dhal, chilli powder, anil savorit semiya, papad etc. Though these people came to normalcy to some extent they still find difficulties in managing their food security need. Hence this support was a greater help for them at distress.

  • Sports materials for 1 school:

We purposely made a plan to visit one of the schools in Gaja cyclone affected areas this time. Thus we landed in St.Mary’s Middle School, Alangudi. We had a long discussion with the Head Master, teachers and students about the aftermath of Gaja cyclone in the Alangudi village and the outcome on school coming children in specific. The children were able to still remember the horrible night of cyclone occurred, how they were able to hide themselves behind the walls at houses, the destruction the cyclone has made on the livelihood of their parents etc. Though there was not a life sentenced death to them in the village still the parents and the students were very much worried about their continuation of their studies. Since we did not have enough money to provide more number of sports materials to these children, we had supported them with few foot balls, ring balls, chess boards etc which all made them to play happily forgetting the incidence of Gaja cyclone. We only believe that these children are able to requip themselves to normalcy again and to concentrate on their studies. We would be happy to see them as normal children with the kind provision of recreational equipments and play materials through the GlobalGiving support.

7. Results obtained:

  • Educational materials and guidance was provided to 10 children. As a result of this, the possible school absenteeism was prevented and stopped.
  • Through the small ration supply to 5 families in Mayanoor, the family members found themselves to provide 3 meals a day and to eke out their further livelihood options peacefully.
  • The children again in St.Mary’s Middle School at Alangudi were able to normalize their learning situation through recreational materials and are fully packed with knowledge and wisdom to appear for the final exams in April 2019.

 8. Further request:

As we narrated the plights of Gaja cyclone affected people in Pudukottai district in our project proposal, there was a need to support most of the inhabitants for their survival and rehabilitation measures. Thus we planned to provide cyclone rehabilitation support to 200 families from 5 villages. But due to less realization of Rs.14,700/- (USD 210) during the last quarter of this project we were able to support to very precise number like 10 children with education support, 5 families with ration supplies and 1 school with sports materials. Hence there is still a need for mobilizing the needed resources to support these 200 families. Though we did not receive this collected money of USD 210 from GlobalGiving, we spent the entire amount with the hope that we will get back this in the next few days. May we count on the GlobalGiving and its sponsors to support your generous donation and contribution towards this project during the next few months?

9. Thanks

We take this opportunity to thank GlobalGiving and the donors like Mr.Kohei Yokoyama, Mr.Karthikeyan Kathiresan etcfor their valuable support extended to the “Gaja Cyclone relief measures for 200 families in Pudukottai district”. The affected families and their children are still in need for your continuous support for various rehabilitation measures like notebooks and stationeries for children, dry ration supplies, tarpaulin water proof roof materials, repairing the houses, sports materials for school children, reclamation of land, income generation activities, supply of safe drinking water, medical supplies etc. May we request all the donors to support this project faster? We hope to receive your further support and donations in the coming days.

                                                                        Thanking you,

Yours Sincerely,                                                                                                                     Date: 04.03.2019
