Repression doesn’t just silence a movement—it deliberately starves it of the resources needed to survive.
Around the world, governments are slashing funding, tightening restrictions, and targeting the very organizations that protect LGBTIQ people. The goal is simple: cut off resources and make movements collapse.
Funding Our Freedom is Outright’s response to this dangerous moment.
It is a $10 million emergency campaign (quietly launched in June 2025 and publicly launched in January 2026) designed to keep frontline organizations alive and sustain the global advocacy infrastructure that protects them—right now, when it’s under direct attack. As of the writing of this report, Outright has identified 51% of the campaign’s goal; secured resources are being put to work at Outright, and grant-making is underway.
We’ve already seen what happens when funding disappears.
In Morocco, the only registered organization working on gender-based violence and the rights of women and LGBTIQ people lost U.S.government funding after it was terminated in 2025. Rent and staff salaries became impossible to cover—and years of advocacy were at risk of pausing.
Emergency support from Outright last year helped the organization retain three staff members—enough to keep their doors open. That minimal capacity led to something extraordinary: a formal invitation to participate in national policy reform—the first of its kind—creating a direct pathway into decision-making spaces for LGBTIQ people.
This is what’s at stake when funding is cut.
And this is what becomes possible when it’s restored.
What happened in Morocco is not isolated. Funding cuts across the U.S. and globally made 2025 the most destructive year in decades—eliminating over a quarter of global funding for LGBTIQ organizations. And still, the movement endured—because people like you refused to let repression win.
