WHAT A DIFFERENCE A FEW WEEKS CAN MAKE TO A CHILD!

By JAN DREW | TREASURER, THE HILL WHEELER CHARITY

Kindergarten kids take their afternoon nap !
Kindergarten kids take their afternoon nap !

Dear Friends and Supporters .......it is difficult to put into words the difference that your wonderful generosity has made to the kids in this slum settlement in Kenya!  Your combined donations have ensured that at least 16 of the poorest and most disadvantaged pupils and orphans will be able to have another year of free education   THANK YOU SO MUCH!

The even wider ranging effect of this is that  by funding these 16 kids at 8 x the £125 annual school fees, , we are now able to pay the 12 teachers for another two months which will benefit not only THESE pupils, but the other pupils in the school.

The School has been going through a very difficult phase in the its history, due to the effect on the local economy of UK. US and Australia  advice against travel to Kenya due to the threat of terrorist attacks on tourists by groups from across the border in Somalia.  This has meant the closure of many holiday hotels which used to provide work for the parents, and the loss of employment means that they can no longer afford to feed their families, let alone send their kids to school.  It is an impossible but inevitable choice which they have to make ....... but we CAN make a difference because of your kind donation! which has opened the way for a future which will ensure that THEIR children will also have a future, maybe away from this very run down slum area on the outskirts of Mombasa in Kenya.

Lack of money to pay staff means fewer teachers!       Kids eat

Lack of teachers means                 But they enjoy eating "alfresco"

           sharing ..                                        at lunchtime!

The children attend this school from the age of 2 years up to 15 years of age, and GIVEN THE CHANCE, are able to take the national KCPE exams which will enable them to go on to higher, secondary education ... if their parents can afford to pay for them!

Sadly, it is a problem which is going to be with us for a long time, as poverty is rife in this very poor part of our world!

Our current project will continue with the blessing of the Global Giving organisation, so PLEASE, if you can ever spare a further donation, we can assure you that every penny will go towards ensuring a future for these poor kids in Mtomondoni, Kenya!

Due to the currenteconomic situation, our next project HAS to be to replace the derelict wooden Kindergarten Classrooms which have succumbed to the effects of the weather and THE VORACIOUS APPETITES OF THE TERMITES!  ( see photo)   Do look out for the new Global Giving Project if you feel you can help, but meanwhile, a huge thank you for your help in funding fees for thes 16 youngsters ... their success will be a testament to your wonderful generosity!

YOU are making such a difference to their futures!

You are making such a difference to their future ...

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HELPING US TO HELP THEM!
