Through our extensive engagement and work within our communities, our teams have identified a growing problem: the increasing economic and social disenfranchisement of young people in rural areas. Eightypercent of Kenya’s population is under the age of 35. Yet there is a clear, expanding disparity between those in urban areas to those living in rural & peri-urban areas. A lack of educational, employment and healthcare opportunities has created an environment that encourages young people to either migrate to urban areas or turn to dangerous, often illegal behaviours to support themselves. This has put a considerable strain on rural communities that are already struggling with other factors such as climate change.
To empower youth and their families, particularly in Mumias town, we are launching a programme to train youth in kitchen gardening using innnovative, space-saving techniques such as verticle gardening and using rubber tyres instead of garden beds. This programme is being undertaken with schools we already partner with and new schools in our network.
With this new thrust on peri-urban gardening, the kitchen gardening programme is flourishing and reaching several vulnerable groups including young mothers of children suffering from malnutrition, farmers, and youth.
