Completion of 300 girls for STEM

By Solomon Tommy | Volunteer Programme Manager

"I am a double beneficiary of the Asisat Oshoala Academy, from the School Project and the Vocational Skills scholarship. The School Project was an interesting programme because it exposed us to another important aspect of life aside from football. We had the privilege to learn about personal and environmental hygiene. We were taught about menstrual hygiene and how to take care of ourselves as girls and female footballers during the menstrual period. We were also taught how to manage the stress and anxiety that come with football and expected life goals to make sure our mental health is not tampered with. Beyond the mentorship sessions in the School Project, I was also sponsored by the Academy to acquire the practical knowledge of barbing through one of the vocational training centres in Lagos, and I am glad to have that skill in addition to my football career. It was indeed a wonderful program and would encourage more of it" – Opara Kate (16 years, AOA player)

The Academy organized a successful 6-month vocational skills program, which did not focus on STEM (due to poor funding) but on other skills that girls could translate to income-generating activities, including social media marketing, barbing, photography, make up artistry, and auto repairs. 20 girls participated in this program, and have since graduated.
