Clay stove ready for sale

Thanks for your continued generous gift for Clay Stove Project.
In 2015; with a loan capital from Deki, Hope Ofiriha granted loans to ten new entrepreneurs in Namboole. Thanks to training, women in Namboole acquire the skills, support and financial resources they need to establish sustainable small businesses. They invest their income in meeting their basic needs and those of their families, including their children's education. They make and sell clay stove a very favorite cooking device in East Africa. The loans are repayable after a year by installments. A group has 20 members where to secure each other's repayment in case of defaulting.

Hope Ofiriha had been supporting women who fled from African newest state to settle in Namboole in the outskirt of Kampala when social unrest broke out in South Sudan in December 2013. Hope Ofiriha will pay fees for a woman to attend skills training to make clay stove.

Hope Ofiriha sends a new field up after a quarter to let you know how your contribution is impacting the lives of these women and their children.

The government and the opposition have failed to reach a peace deal despite the pressure from IGAD, UN, and the World. There are new fierce clashes in Jonglei and Upper Nile States. Humanitarian situation is worsening. There are 1.5 million people displaced from their villages of which some are living in exile as refugees.

In Owinyikibul of Magwi County, new soldiers recruit clashed with local villagers earlier March. The drunken soldier had refused to pay for the services where he was stabbed in a bar fighting. He then organized his fellow recruits burning more than 100 houses and market stalls in retaliation. One recruit in the clashes. A chief has blamed the trainers for failing to keep discipline.

Clay stove is a booming enterprise

Hope Ofiriha wishes you a Merry Christmas, and a prosperous new year!

There is no political agreement reach between the government and SPLA in opposition despite the IGAD sponsored peace talks in Adisababa since the alleged coup. South Sudan is getting worse every day, and hope for peace is weak as the clashes continue to take place in Jonglei state between the regime and rebel forces.

With loan capital from our partner, Hope Ofiriha granted loans to clients who are in business of making and selling clay stove to make a living. These customers are living in Namboole in outskirt of Kampala. The clay oven is a booming because the cooking device is popular in East Africa with demand remaining constant. With Deki fund, Hope Ofiriha collects repayments every month from each client. The loan capital is a liability that means at the end of partnership period Deki will reclaim their fund back.

As reported in the last quarter, five women returnees been trained in clay stove production skills for the duration of three months. The trainees have applied for a loan to start clay stove as income generation activity to provide for their families with basic needs and pay fees to keep their children in school. The repayments collected from your previous contributions and new donations - sum up be cycled as a loan to the new clients.

This form of loan although are always recollected by the group to give to new borrowers, the aim is to reach many women along the way who are head households. The group do not need to repay the loan capital collected from GlobalGiving donors, but Hope Ofiriha ensures the loan recycles within the group to benefit many clients.

Gathering wood is risky

Returnee making clay stove to make a living

Thanks for your recent generous gift to Stop Cook stoves from Killing in South Sudan.

Since December 15, 2013 when social unrest broke up in South Sudan, women from Magwi County returned to Namboole and Kibuli, an area in the outskirt of Kampala city. These returnees settled in places they had lived before to engage income generation activity to provide their families with basic needs and pay school fee to educate their children.

With the fund from Deki (our microfinance lead partner) Hope Ofiriha had granted loans to twenty clients who are in the business operation of making and selling the clay wood stove. These clients are living in exile in Namboole, Uganda. More returnees will get loans as well.

With a contribution from GlobalGiving donors, Hope Ofiriha is funding the training of five returnees who are living in exile around Kampala city. The aim is after they had finished skill training, they will operate a business of making and selling clay stove to support themselves and their families. In the next quarter, four women from Omilling will be sponsored to attend skill training in clay stove making in Uganda.

In south Sudan, the shortage of firewood for cooking is one of several problems faced by many. Gathering wood women's duty that is fraught with dangers; they gamble with life-threatening attacks during the search for firewood in order to feed their families. In certain areas around Juba, firewood are depleted, leading women to travel further or dip up tree roots, eliminating any chance of the trees growing again. Even if women survive this, they are still exposing themselves and their children to potentially deadly smoke fumes.

The practical solution to tackle this issues is through the use of clay stove, which are both affordable and easy to use and make; cutting the amount of risky trips for firewood and allowing more trees the opportunity to grow. Subsequently, burning smaller amounts of firewood means less smoke will engulf homes and their lungs.
