About a year ago our soursop trees finally started fruiting. This year they are producing enough fruit for us to sell!!! We previously distributed about 400 soursop tree seedlings around the villages on Nyenje and Budugala, and now they are finally starting to bring the villagers money!
First off, soursop fruits are super healthy as they are jam packed with vitamins and such. They are also delicious with super sweet white pulp around black seeds. The fruits can be eaten fresh, canned, juiced, mixed into smoothies, made into jam, and probably all sorts of other concoctions not listed here.
Locally, the soursop fruits are coveted for their alleged cancer treating/ preventing properties, and on a retail market they sell for between $0.58 and $2.06 per fruit depending on the size, which in Uganda is pretty fantastic!
As the soursop are covered in little spikes, we have to cut off the spikes before the fruits can be packed to bring to Kampala. Otherwise the fruits stab each other and they spoil.
This is empowerment. This is cash crop agriculture and it is helping improve the lives of hundreds of families. And as an added bonus- what does not go to the market to be sold is a delicious treat for the entire family!
