From the Mines to the Classroom

By Jenny Appleby | Project administrator

Across the Democratic Republic of the Congo, tens of thousands of children face the hazardous existence of living and working in cobalt mining environments, facing severe health risks and extreme exploitation instead of getting an education. At Kimbilio, we have previously been able to intervene, offering child miners a positive and safe childhood they have been denied.

We are incredibly thrilled to share that Dorsen and Richard—the two young boys whose stories captured the world's attention in the Sky News cobalt mining expose—are still living safely with us at Kimbilio! They are completely away from the dangers of the mines and are absolutely thriving in the classroom. Lately, both boys have developed a massive passion for electronics, trading grueling manual labor for an inspired, bright future in technology.
Helping children heal from the trauma of severe exploitation requires continuous, long-term care, a stable living environment, and targeted educational support. The funds donated by you are vital to keeping our transit houses open, ensuring we have the steady resources needed to rescue more children from the mines and guide them toward a hopeful future.
We want to extend our heartfelt thanks for your ongoing support. Your generosity directly changes the trajectory of lives like Dorsen’s and Richard’s. We look forward to keeping our classrooms full and helping more children discover their true potential, powered entirely by your incredible partnership!
