Project Report

Brick Kiln Freedom Project – Rescue of Zafar Masih Family

1. Executive Summary

This report presents the successful rescue and liberation of a family of bonded laborers from a brick kiln in Pakistan, carried out under the Brick Kiln Freedom Project.

The family of Zafar Masih was trapped in a cycle of forced labor for approximately seven years due to an outstanding debt of USD $1,350. This debt bound the family to exploitative working conditions with no legal or financial escape.

Through the humanitarian intervention of Moses Welfare Foundation, the debt was fully repaid, and the family was safely rescued and released. Immediate relief, including food assistance and stabilization support, was also provided.

2. Background & Problem Statement

Bonded labor remains a deeply rooted issue in Pakistan’s brick kiln industry, where vulnerable families are trapped in intergenerational debt cycles. These systems often involve:

  • Manipulated or inherited debts
  • Exploitative working conditions
  • Lack of access to education for children
  • Absence of legal protection and financial alternatives

In this case, the family of Zafar Masih became trapped in forced labor for years due to a relatively small debt, which grew into a barrier to total freedom and human dignity.

3. Beneficiary Profile

Primary Beneficiary: Zafar Masih

Family Composition:

  • Wife (health-compromised, suffering from high blood pressure)
  • Two children (ages 5 and 4)
  • One newborn baby

Living Conditions:

  • Extreme poverty inside a brick kiln environment
  • Unsafe working conditions
  • No access to education for children
  • No medical care or social protection

4. Nature of Bonded Debt

  • Total Debt Amount: USD $1,350
  • Duration of Bondage: Approximately 7 years
  • Type: Intergenerational brick kiln debt system
  • Impact: Forced labor, restricted mobility, and loss of basic human rights

Despite being a relatively small financial amount, the debt created a long-term cycle of exploitation for the entire family.

5. Intervention by Moses Welfare Foundation

The Moses Welfare Foundation carried out the following critical interventions:

  • Full repayment of bonded labor debt ($1,350 USD)
  • Negotiation with brick kiln owners for safe release
  • Physical rescue and relocation of the family
  • Emergency ration and food support
  • Initial rehabilitation and stabilization assistance
  • Awareness counseling on rights, dignity, and freedom

6. Outcomes & Impact

The intervention produced immediate and life-changing results:

  • Family is fully liberated from the bonded labor system
  • Safe removal from a hazardous brick kiln environment
  • Restoration of basic human dignity and protection
  • Children removed from forced labor exposure
  • Improved hope for education and future development
  • Reduced psychological and financial stress on the family

This intervention permanently broke a seven-year cycle of exploitation.

7. Key Challenges Addressed

  • The debt-based slavery system is trapping vulnerable families
  • Lack of external financial support mechanisms
  • Health vulnerabilities, especially maternal health risks
  • Absence of social protection and legal awareness
  • Intergenerational poverty and labor dependency

8. Sustainability & Long-Term Support Plan

To ensure lasting recovery, the following measures are being implemented:

  • Continuous monitoring of family well-being
  • Support for livelihood rehabilitation opportunities
  • Educational inclusion planning for children
  • Ongoing humanitarian assistance through donor partnerships
  • Community awareness to prevent future bonded labor cases

9. Conclusion

The rescue of the family of Zafar Masih highlights how even a small debt of $1,350 USD can trap entire families in prolonged cycles of bonded labor.

This case demonstrates the urgent need for continued intervention, rescue operations, and rehabilitation programs in brick kiln communities.

With continued support from donors through platforms like GlobalGiving, organizations such as the Moses Welfare Foundation can expand this mission and bring freedom to many more families still trapped in modern-day slavery.
