Give an Hour is very excited about our first ever GLOBALLY coordinated event to change the culture of mental health! And, we’d like for you to join us!
During A Week to Change Direction we are encouraging individuals, corporations and non-profits to engage in activities that best reflect their unique strengths, skills and passion in order to increase knowledge, raise awareness and increase support for efforts that are working to change the culture of mental health globally so that all in need receive the care and support they deserve.
Give an Hour’s (501 c3) mission is to develop networks of skill-based volunteers capable of responding to both acute and chronic conditions prevalent within society. Since 2005, the non-profit organization has provided free mental health services to U.S. service members, veterans and their families. In 2016, Give an Hour began expanding our efforts to address the mental health needs of other at risk or underserved populations including at risk teens, survivors of gun violence, victims of human trafficking and those affected by natural and man-made disasters. Thus far, Give an Hour has donated over 277,000 hours of free care to those in need valued at nearly $28M.
The Campaign to Change Direction – which launched in 2015 – is a public health initiative focused on changing the culture of mental health so that all in need receive the care and support they deserve. Change Direction encourages everyone to care for their mental well-being just as they do their physical well-being. In addition, Change Direction addresses common barriers to understanding mental health and encourages everyone to Know the Five Signs of Emotional Suffering that may indicate someone is in emotional pain and needs help: change in personality, agitation, withdrawal, decline in personal care, and hopelessness.
Mental Health is critical to everyone and one out of four people worldwide have a diagnoseable mental health condition. Unfortunately, limited funding, resources and Cultural stereotypes prevent people from receiving help when they need it.
According to the World Economic Forum, mental illness will account for more than half of the economic burden of disease over the next two decades – more than cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases combined.
Between 76% and 85% of people with mental health conditions receive no treatment in low- and middle-income countries. In high income countries, between 35% and 50% people with mental disorders receive no treatment.
A Week to Change Direction will be a week of action, advocacy, culture change and fundraising for organizations, corporations, universities, communities, and individual. ADD LINK:: https://www.changedirection.org/a-week-to-change-direction/
