When Food and Medicine Compete

Dear Donors,

Imagine being an elderly woman living with high blood pressure. Your medicine is running out, there is little food left at home, and the small amount of money in your hand cannot pay for both.

Which one do you choose?

For many older people living on very little income in Nigeria, this is not an imaginary situation. The cost of healthcare can determine whether someone seeks treatment, delays it, or goes without it.

According to the World Health Organization, households paid about 72% of Nigeria's current health expenditure directly from their own pockets in 2023. For an elderly person without a steady income, even a routine medical need can become a heavy financial burden.

We see the human side behind these numbers.

It is the elderly woman stretching her medicine because she cannot afford another pack. It is the older man who has not checked his blood pressure for months because transportation to a clinic and the cost of treatment are beyond what he can afford.

Through this project, our doctors, nurses, and health workers are working to bring free medicines and basic medical care closer to elderly people who need them. We provide health checks and medicines for conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, as well as malaria and common infections.

For elderly people living with disabilities or having difficulty travelling, home visits can mean receiving care without having to make a difficult journey to a clinic.

No elderly person should have to decide whether to eat today or buy the medicine that keeps their condition under control.

To every donor helping us reach them, thank you. Behind every medicine provided is a person whose life matters.

Please share this project with your family and friends. You can also create an individual fundraiser and invite others to help us place medicines into the hands of more elderly people who need them.

Thank you for caring.

With gratitude,
Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri
