Refugee hosting communities are always at shortage of adequate health services due to the ever growing population driven into those places by the unending conflicts. This, coupled with the strain on land, shortage of food and an uphill battle for education makes the population undergo a challenging struggle to attain good standards of living. This is not different from what is happening in the refugee settlements in West Nile as the country still upholds its set commitment to host the refugees. This has further set the area into multi dimensional poverty leaving every sector in need of resuscitative measures.
KIHEFO West Nile program, in its mobile clinic approach, has again alleviated the condition with the focus on both non infectious and infectious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, Diabetes, Cervical cancer and hypertension. Over 360 people as recorded in the attendance register were able to interact with the health workers as they were screened for the diseases and treated. This was complimented by eye check up program which made it possible for people to screen for sight failing illnesses which are rarer than the basic medical services provided. The children available were dewormed so as to prevent worm infestation. This was specifically to support the communities around the boarder areas.
The presence of over 360 people with adults count ticking the 200 mark was quickly tagged as many of them were found waiting for the services. They were given health education on various topics including safe delivery for mothers, malnutrition and good feeding for under five years and many other topics.
Since the end of conflicts in South Sudan and DRC is not in sight, the refugees are not planning to return home very soon. Education on health and treatment and screening for basic conditions has brought untold joy and hope as it will keep them waiting for the next opportunity. This in near future will lead to improvement of communities as vital services such as education will be attained for the children who are an integral part in the development of a society. Regular support through mobile clinics will make them focus on income generation and sending children to school.
However, without commitment to funding, this life improving program is bound to collapse which will leave the refugees and the host population helpless as a quick return is not envisioned. Our appeal, to friends and partners , is that more support will come in handy in this journey to held refugees host communities.
