At Footprints 4 Sam, we often say that when we care for a child, we also care for the family that surrounds them. In South Africa however, more often than not, that family is held together by an extraordinary woman affectionately known as ‘Gogo”.
This report is dedicated to a very special Gogo, Fundiswa, who was a regular VIP passenger on our Cape Town Super Hero Transport vehicle with her beautiful granddaughter Endinako. Endinako sadly passed away recently and we hold Fundiswa and the rest of the family in our hearts always. Melissa managed to capture the beautiful photograph above that was taken in Cape Town with Fundiswa and Endinako - a memory we will treasure forever.
In our last report, we shared how your generosity enabled us to provide safe and compassionate transport through our Super Sam Hero Transport Initiative and deliver 120 Super Sam Hero Food and Care Buckets to families across South Africa. Thanks to your continued support, we are thrilled to share the next chapter of the Gogo Relief Project – the launch of our dedicated Johannesburg transport vehicle.
This is so much more than a new vehicle. It is hope on wheels.
In South Africa, nearly 8 million children (approximately 38% of all children) live in grandparent headed households, with grandmothers carrying the responsibility of caring for and raising the next generation. For many of the families we support, Gogo is the one waking up before dawn to prepare for a hospital appointment, navigating public transport with a sick child and providing the love, strength and stability that every child deserves.
Many of these incredible women are caring for their grandchildren while their own children work to provide for the family. Others have become primary caregivers in circumstances they never imagined. What they all have in common is an unwavering commitment to ensuring their precious grandchildren receive the care they need.
For a child living with a chronic or life-limiting illness, accessing specialised medical care can be incredibly challenging. A single hospital visit can mean several taxi rides, hours spent travelling and significant financial strain on families who are already facing difficult circumstances.
That is why the launch of our Johannesburg vehicle is such a significant milestone.
For the first time, Footprints 4 Sam can provide our dedicated Super Sam Hero transport service to children and their caregivers in Johannesburg, ensuring they can travel safely and comfortably to essential medical appointments.
Every kilometre travelled represents so much more than a journey from home to hospital. It means one less thing for a Gogo to worry about. It means fewer missed appointments, less financial pressure and the reassurance that someone is walking this road alongside them.
The Gogo Relief Project has always been about practical support delivered with dignity, compassion and kindness. Whether it is providing food and care buckets, transporting children to life-saving treatment or our amazing drivers simply offering a listening ear and an understanding smile, our mission remains the same: to ensure that no family feels alone on their journey.
Your generosity is helping us extend our footprint of compassion beyond Cape Town and into Johannesburg, allowing us to reach even more children and the remarkable gogos who care for them every single day.
Thank you for believing in our work and together, we are making every journey a little easier and every child a little more supported.
Until next time,
Jo and the Footprints 4 Sam Team
