In Kayonza, Rwanda, 8,000 students attend schools with no trees, no clean water, and not enough food. Having reviewed and tested with 5 schools, we have launched a project that will plant 5,000 trees, install 20 rainwater tanks with filters, and create vegetable gardens at 20 schools-providing shade, nutritious meals, and clean water. Students will lead environmental clubs, learning skills they take home to their families. Your support means children eat, learn, and thrive.
In Kayonza District, Rwanda's Eastern Province, drought is a daily crisis. According to the Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) 2025, 26.1% of children under five are stunted due to chronic malnutrition. Agricultural drought affects over 10% of the region in peak years. Meanwhile, 15.2% of Rwandan girls miss school during menstruation due to lack of clean water and sanitation (UNICEF Rwanda, 2024). School feeding programs reach only 72% of students.
We will transform 20 schools in Kayonza, Rwanda by planting 5,000 trees for shade and fruit, installing 20 rainwater tanks (5,000L each) with filters for clean water, and creating vegetable gardens for nutritious meals. We train 40 teachers and establish environmental clubs where 50 students per school learn sustainable farming. Children eat, drink clean water, and girls attend school with dignity. Students take skills home, creating lasting community change.
This project will create lasting change for 8,000 students and 5,000 families. Five thousand trees will sequester carbon, combat climate change, and bear fruit for decades. Trained teachers and environmental clubs will sustain gardens and tree care year after year. Students will take farming skills home, improving family nutrition. Girls will stay in school with clean water and dignity. Schools become green, resilient hubs serving generations.
