Growing and accessing healthy food requires spaces that can withstand increasing heat, support biodiversity, retain water, and provide shade. Reforestation and urban greening are essential to creating the conditions where community gardens, food production, and other forms of local stewardship can thrive.
For this reason we continue to sustain the reforestation and education initiative in Caguas with our Servicio Forestal Comunitario team. For this period our amazing team completed to certify residents in tree care, maintenance, and preservation of urban trees. Participants developed practical skills in urban agroforestry, tree species identification and urban tree inventory, soil, fertilizer, water, and pest management, landscape design and planting principles and safety, applicable laws, equipment use, and pruning risk assessment. This group of residents is now equipped to support their neighbors and respond to tree-related needs and emergencies, strengthening local capacity for long-term urban forest stewardship.
Community members are also participating in citizen science expeditions through iNaturalist, documenting the biodiversity of Barrio Pueblo and El Paseo Honor al Río. Residents are exploring, identifying, and documenting the plants and wildlife found throughout their urban environment, creating a growing record of Caguas' biodiversity.
We are preparing the next phase of our collaborative projects in Caguas, including depaving spaces in disuse and composter co-creation along community partners. These activities connect the pieces of a healthier urban ecosystem: trees, soil, water, biodiversity, food, and people.
We always appreciate your support. Your donations help us continue cultivating community-led solutions for food sovereignty, urban resilience, and greener, more sustainable spaces.
