Happy Holidays

By Mastora Y Bakhiet | Project Leader

Hello my friends,

Happy Holidays! Wish you and your family wonderful, peaceful, and lovely celebrations! We are grateful for your support.

Helping the survivors of Darfur genocide to grow their own food to reduce hunger is one of our goals. The refugees are grateful for your support and generosity. Two years ago, they were able to harvest enough crops to feed their families and to donate some to those who couldn’t grow their food due to their ages, disabilities, or lack of resources.

I would like to share with you a story from one of our volunteers who lives in a Darfur refugee camp. He and his three friends decided to work with a local community farmer. They agreed that the local farmer would provide land, seeds, tools, and food for them from the beginning of the farm work to the harvest. Our volunteer and his friends would do all the required farm work such as ploughing, cutting trees, planting seeds, and harvesting. After harvest, they sold their crops. Then, they subtract the cost of the farming to divide the profit. Half of the profit would go to the owner of the farm and the other half will be divided among the four friends.

Based on this agreement, the four friends left the camp to stay on the farm from the last week of May to December 22, 2018. They were optimistic about the opportunity. They hoped to earn money to bring to their families. The farm looked promising due to lots of rain and hard work. Unfortunately, our volunteer and his friends found out that the actual profit was less than expected.

The farm owner told them that after he sold the products the total income was less than the cost of producing the crops. He lost his money and there was absolutely no profit. Therefore, the four friends left the farm with nothing. It is extremely disappointing that they had to leave empty handed when they had high hopes.

Please help us by donating to help them grow their own food to ensure that they can bring it home to their families.
