Many women who sell fresh farm produce in Abuja markets have limited access to training on safe handling and storage of food items. Poor handling of fruits, vegetables, and grains can expose buyers to contamination and food related illness. This project will organize a training program for 100 market women during World Food Safety Day. Participants will learn safe handling, proper storage, and hygiene practices that help keep farm produce clean and safe for consumers.
Fresh farm produce such as fruits, vegetables, and grains can become contaminated during harvesting, transport, or market handling. According to the World Health Organization, contaminated food leads to millions of illnesses each year worldwide. Many small scale produce sellers lack training on safe storage, hygiene, and protection of fresh food in open markets.
The project will organize a training session for women who sell farm produce in Abuja markets. Health educators will teach safe handling of fruits, vegetables, and grains, including proper washing, storage, and protection from contamination. Demonstrations will show how produce can be kept clean during market display and transport.
Training market women on safe handling of farm produce can help reduce contamination and protect the health of consumers. When sellers apply safe storage and hygiene practices, fresh food sold in markets becomes safer for families. Knowledge gained from the training can also spread to other vendors and communities.
