The Food Rescue Program by SOS Thailand helps reduce food waste and fight hunger. Each day, we rescue surplus food from supermarkets, hotels, restaurants, and manufacturers. This rescued food is distributed to underserved communities, shelters, and schools across Thailand. With just 5 baht, we provide one meal, addressing both food insecurity and environmental impact. We currently operate in Bangkok, Hua Hin, Phuket, and Chiang Mai and are expanding our volunteer network nationwide.
The problem SOS Thailand addresses is the dual challenge of food waste and food insecurity. Every year, large amounts of edible food are discarded by supermarkets, restaurants, and manufacturers due to excess stock or cosmetic imperfections, despite being safe to consume. At the same time, many low-income communities face hunger and lack access to nutritious meals, leading to worsened food insecurity and environmental waste.
This project will solve the problem by rescuing surplus food that would otherwise go to waste and redistributing it to communities in need. SOS Thailand collects edible food from supermarkets, hotels, and restaurants, sorting and delivering it to shelters, schools, and underprivileged areas. By reducing food waste and addressing hunger simultaneously, the program helps provide nutritious meals to vulnerable populations, reduces environmental impact, and fosters a more sustainable food system.
The long-term impact of this project includes a significant reduction in food waste and improved food security for vulnerable populations in Thailand. By establishing sustainable food rescue networks, the program will create a more efficient food distribution system, reducing hunger and promoting healthier communities. It will also foster environmental awareness and encourage responsible food consumption, creating lasting social and environmental benefits.
