With 2018 underway, we’re happy to update you on some of the recent activity at the Center for Allergy at Yitzhak Shamir (Assaf HaRofeh) Medical Center. As of this writing, there are 1233 patients who have participated in our oral immunotherapy (OIT) programs for food allergy. While milk and peanut by far remain the two most treated allergies in our center (63% and 20% of patients, respectively), 2017 ended with the treenut allergy treatment program in third place, comprising 7% of patients, and the sesame program for 5% of patients . All told, 86% of patients in our various OIT programs attain complete (70%) or partial (16%) desensitization to their respective foods after treatment. The surge in enrollment for our treenut treatment program is reflective of the efforts we have made over the past two years to accurately diagnose, characterize, and ultimately treat treenut allergy. These efforts have resulted in a recent publication (link below) in which we describe the relationships between various treenut allergies, and suggest possible diagnostic strategies for correctly identifying treenut allergy minimizing the need for an oral food challenge.
In other developments, we are continuing our study of the contributory roles played by the gut microbiota in the maintenance or resolution of food allergy. The gut microbiota is the microorgansimal population of the stomach and intestine. In recent years, the relationship between the gut microbiota population and human health has gained appreciation and while data are still being analyzed, they do indicate that there might be food allergic microbiota signatures. Using cell culture systems, we are planning to look at the immunomodulatory effects of the metabolites released by the microbiota of different patients. We are very excited about this project, as it highlights our approach of understanding clinical developments in light of the underlying immunological mechanisms.
As always , we thank you for your support for our project, and look forward to updating you on our continued progress. Wishing you a happy and successful 2018.
