Nearly half of Afghanistan's population needs humanitarian assistance. For nearly five years, Afghans have been struggling to survive amidst economic hardships and widespread unemployment.
Additionally, the regional conflict with Iran that has driven food prices up. In May, the UN warned that food insecurity in Afghanistan is worsening with women and children facing the most severe consequences.
Food insecurity puts the whole family at risk as they look for ways to survive, which include requiring their children to work, withdrawing them from school, or arranging marriage for their daughters as young as 9 or 10.
Recent recipients of our food distribution told us about how their children are impacted by their situations:
My oldest son is only 10 years old. He goes to the city and carries people's goods and belongings using a wheelbarrow to earn a little money for our family.
My husband has cancer, and my children are still small. The breadwinner of our house is my thirteen-year-old son, who earns about 3,000 Afghanis (about $45). This is not enough to cover our living expenses or my husband's medical treatment.
We do not have anyone who can work and provide income for our family. I used to work as a tailor, but nowadays my eyesight has become weak. My older daughter used to work with me, but she was injured in a car accident. Because of these difficulties, our family is facing serious financial problems.
AAFF is committed to continuing to partner with families in need in this crucial time. We are preparing for our next food distribution where we plan to support over 100 families with a month of staple food supplies such as rice, beans, and flour.
In our last distribution, a mother said, "I am very happy that this food makes things easier for my son and helps us a lot. I would like to sincerely thank you for your kindness and support."
