Floods in Slovenia Emergency

By Katja Kotnik | Country Director

ADRA connected and called local authorities in three regions and implemented different stages of needs assessment on the field. ADRA Slovenia has been assigned and approved to work in the following area’s:

Operation 1 – Central Slovenia (Komenda, Mengeš, Kamnik municipality)

Operation 2 – Zg. Savinjska region (Ljubno, Nazarje, Braslovce and Polzela municipality)

Operation 3 – Koroška region (Mezica, Prevalje, Crna na Koroškem municipalities)

First rapid assessment in the central Slovenia, Savinjska and Koroška region and therefore formed three operation locations and on each location three stages of intervention. More detailed needs assessment was implemented by ADRA staff, ADRA Slovenia volunteers and Seventh day Adventist church members and with assistance of Civil protection, municipality and firefighters as well as other NGOs.

According to needs assessment first urgent needs were in three phases, in the IR ADRA Slovenia focused on the third phase:

  1. Phase: need for water supply, volunteers assistance to clean houses, equipment for cleaning (wheelbarrows, shovels, brooms).
  2. Phase: house dryers, and proper training for using the dryers with additional printed brochure given to recipient about the procedures after floods and for drying.
  3. Phase: cash vouchers since floods have destroyed all inner equipment of houses and people will need to reconstruct and dry their houses and the electricity bills will be increased because of drying of houses.

ADRA Slovenia analyzed that the most vulnerable groups after the intervention and in need of greater attention and those to obtain voucher aid were:

- elderly citizens in the rural areas, since they lack social network to assist them with PSS, rehabilitation and because they cannot gain information about possible assistance as fast as the younger population

- families with multiple children, that have higher maintenance expenditures and material (food, hygene, etc) needs than smaller families

- households that lost their settlement permanently or for longer period, since the reconstruction and sanation of their homes takes longer time and higher financial input

- persons who lost their jobs, as their company quarters were flooded and their income lost.

ADRA Slovenia assisted the affected population through Initial response project and with private funding in the following way:

- in the first phase reached 139 HH with cleaning and around 510HH with food, water and hygene supplies,

- in the second phase 220 HH with providing dryers and

- in the third phase reached 130HH with distribution of vouchers for food and other supplies for 300€, among which were 122 men, 152 women, 61 girls, 64 boys – altogether 399 individuals.
